Most parents think the question is, can this person speak Mandarin. That is not the question. The question is, can this person diagnose the child, design a plan, and deliver a measurable result in twelve weeks.
Red flag one: they cannot explain a tone shift
Ask the tutor to explain why the third tone changes when followed by another third tone. If the answer is, I just say it that way, you are looking at a native speaker, not a teacher.
A real teacher can name the rule, give three examples, and predict where students will get it wrong. That is the difference.
Red flag two: no diagnostic before the first lesson
If a tutor says, send the child, we will see, walk away. A teacher who does not diagnose is guessing.

Ask, name three students you taught and what HSK level they reached and how long it took.

Red flag four: pricing is the first conversation
If a tutor opens with rate per hour before they understand the child, they are selling a commodity.
A real teacher opens with, tell me about your child, what is the target, what is the timeline. Pricing comes after the plan.
Red flag five: refusal to be observed
Ask if you can sit in on the first lesson. A real teacher says yes without hesitation. A weak teacher gets defensive.
